Drywall Installation
Full hang of 1/2" and 5/8" drywall on walls and ceilings for new construction, additions, and gut renovations. We measure, cut, and fasten every sheet to minimize seams and maximize structural integrity.
Taping & Mudding
Paper tape embedded in first coat, followed by multiple finish coats of joint compound. Each coat is feathered wide and allowed to fully cure before the next — no shortcuts, no bubbles, no cracks.
Level 5 Skim Coat Finish
A full skim coat applied over the entire wall surface after standard finishing. The result is a perfectly flat, uniform surface that holds up under any sheen of paint — including semi-gloss and gloss.
Drywall Repair & Patching
Holes, cracks, water damage, and impact damage repaired to match the surrounding finish. We blend patches seamlessly so you cannot tell where the repair was made.
Ceiling Drywall
Ceiling work requires extra precision — any imperfection is amplified by raking light. We use 5/8" board on ceilings to minimize sag, and take extra care with taping and finishing to deliver a flat, clean result.

What Is a Level 5 Drywall Finish — and Do You Need One?
The Gypsum Association defines five levels of drywall finish, and most homeowners have never heard of any of them. But the finish level on your walls has a direct impact on how your paint looks — especially under raking light or with higher-sheen paints.
A Level 4 finish — the standard for most residential work — leaves the wall smooth enough for flat paint. But if you are using eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, or gloss paint, a Level 4 finish will show every imperfection. The sheen amplifies surface variation, and what looked smooth under primer suddenly shows every lap mark and trowel line.
A Level 5 finish solves that problem. After standard Level 4 prep, we apply a full skim coat of joint compound over the entire wall surface — not just the seams and fasteners, but every square inch. The result is a perfectly uniform surface that holds up under any paint sheen and looks exceptional under any lighting condition.
Gibby recommends Level 5 for any room where you are using a sheen above flat, any room with significant natural light, and any high-end renovation where the walls are a focal point. It costs more than a standard finish — but it is the difference between walls that look good and walls that look exceptional.
The 5 Levels of Drywall Finish
Fire Tape
Tape embedded in joint compound — used in attics, plenum spaces, and areas that will never be seen. No finishing required.
Skim Coat Over Tape
One coat of compound over tape and fasteners. Used in garages and utility spaces where appearance is secondary.
Textured Finish Ready
Two coats of compound, sanded smooth. Appropriate for walls that will receive heavy texture. Not suitable for flat or eggshell paint.
Standard Paint Ready
Three coats of compound, sanded. The most common residential finish — suitable for flat paint and light textures.
Premium Skim Coat
Full skim coat over the entire surface after Level 4 prep. The gold standard — eliminates all surface variation for a perfectly flat, paint-ready wall. Required for semi-gloss, gloss, and high-end residential finishes.
How Brethren Builders Approaches Drywall Work

Hanging: Precision From the Start
We start by measuring and planning the layout to minimize seams and butt joints. Sheets are hung perpendicular to framing members, fastened at the correct spacing, and cut cleanly around outlets, switches, and openings. Ceiling work uses 5/8" board to prevent sag.
Taping: The Foundation of a Flat Wall
Paper tape is embedded in the first coat of joint compound over every seam and inside corner. We use fiberglass mesh tape on butt joints for added strength. Every fastener dimple is filled. The first coat is allowed to fully cure before the second coat is applied.
Finishing: Three Coats, Properly Feathered
Each successive coat is applied wider than the last, feathering the edges out to blend seamlessly with the surrounding wall. Between coats, we sand lightly to remove ridges and imperfections. The final coat is sanded smooth with a pole sander, then wiped clean before priming.
Level 5: The Full Skim
When a Level 5 finish is specified, we apply a thin, uniform skim coat of joint compound over the entire wall surface after the standard finishing process. This coat is troweled flat, allowed to cure, and sanded to a perfectly smooth surface ready for any paint.
